Question

With the help of an activity show that the rate of evaporation increases with increase in surface area.

Solution

Aim of the experiment: To demonstrate that evaporation increases with surface area.

Apparatus required: One glass, one plate, water and a sunny day.

Procedure:

  1. Take one glass and one plate.
  2. Pour an equal amount of water into each.
  3. Step outside with both of them and wait for 20-30 minutes under the sun.
  4. After 30 minutes, measure the amount of water in both the containers.

Observation:

  1. There is less water in the plate than in the glass, i.e., more evaporation took place on the plate than in the glass.
  2. Since evaporation is a surface phenomenon, the rate of evaporation increases as the surface area of the liquid increases.

Conclusion:

Therefore, as the liquid surface area increases, the rate of evaporation increases.
