Question

With the help of an example, differentiate between incomplete dominance and co-dominance?

Open in App
Solution

Definition

Incomplete dominance occurs when the dominant allele is unable to mask the effect of the recessive allele and results in a new heterozygous phenotype different from the parents.

Co-dominance refers to the condition in which the alleles of a gene pair in a heterozygous condition are fully expressed, not showing any dominant-recessive realtionship.

Phenotype of the progeny

F1 generations do not resemble either of the parents in incomplete dominance while F1 generations resemble both the parents in codominance.

Example

Example of incomplete dominance is the presence of the pink colour of flowers in four o'clock flowers. Example of codominance is the human ABO blood group system.
