When a body is about to fall from a height, the body possesses Potential energy due to its position.
When it is thrown down, due to the force of gravity, the body starts moving in downward converting its potential energy to kinetic energy and total mechanical energy being the same.
When it reaches down to the ground, the potential energy becomes zero and Kinetic energy becomes maximum.
