Question

With the help of ray diagram, show the formation of image of a point object due to refraction of light at a spherical surface separation two media of refractive indices n1 and n2(n2>n1) respectively. Using the diagram, derive refraction formula. Write the sign conventions used. What happens to the focal length of a convex lens when it is immersed in water.?

Solution

When light ray enters a medium of different refractive index from another medium, it undergoes change of velocity. This is known as refraction of light. The change in velocity happens both in direction and magnitude of the light wave.
Assumption:
i and r are small
x,y,z are small
MN length of arc (l)
OMu: Object distance
IMu: Image distance
CmR: Radius
Using snell's law,
n1sini=n2sinr
n1sin(x+y)=n2sin(yz) ......(iii) using and (ii)
Using approximation, sin(x+y)x+ysinx+siny
sin(yz)yzsinysinz
Using definition of sinusoid,
sinxMNu
sinzMNu
sinyMNR
Using above approximations, equation (iii) can be rewritten as:
n1(MNu+MNR)=n2(MNRMNu)
Rearranging the terms, we get:
n1u+n2v=n2n1R
Applying sign convention, uu
v+v
R+R
n2vn1u=n2n1R
