In the era of economic reforms, globalization, liberalization, and privatization, women empowerment is the precondition for economic development. The empowerment of women puts women in a stronger position and provides them with the power to participate along with men in shaping society and to influence development at all levels of society. In India, between 1990 and 2005, the states with the highest percentage of women in the labour force grew the fastest economically and saw the largest reductions in poverty.
