Question

Work function of Al is 4.2eV. If two photons, each of energy 2.5eV are incident on its surface, will the emission of electrons take place? Justify your answer.

Solution

Given that ;
Work function of Al,ϕ=4.2eV
The energy of each incident photon, E
E=2.5eV
As we know, one photon can eject one electron only. The emission of electrons will take place only when the minimum energy of the incident photon will be equal to the work function of the metal.
Here, the energy of each photon (E=2.5eV) is less than the work function of aluminum.
So, the emission will not take place.
