Would an alcohol thermometer be suitable for determining the temperature of boiling water? Justify your answer.

No. Alcohol starts boiling at 80C while boiling point of mercury is 357C. Therefore, a mercury thermometer is used for measuring high temperatures.

Because the temperature of boiling water is 100°C but the maximum temperature alcohol thermometer can measure is 80°C.

So, It cannot measure the temperature of boiling water as it's temperature is beyond its own boiling point.
