Question

Write a balanced chemical reaction where the natural mixing of two colorless aqueous solutions produces a yellow precipitate.

Open in App
Solution

Precipitation reaction:

  1. A precipitate is an insoluble solid which is obtained by the process of a precipitation reaction.
  2. A precipitation reaction is a reaction that takes place in an aqueous solution in which cations and anions are combined to form an insoluble solid which is termed a precipitate.

Few examples of a precipitation reaction:

1 CuSO4(aq)(Coppersuphate)+2NaOH(aq)(Sodiumhydroxide)Na2SO4(s)(Sodiumsulphate)+Cu(OH)2(Copperhydroxide)Precipitate

2.Pb(NO3)2(aq)(Leadnitrate)+2NaI(aq)(SodiumIodide)PbI2(s)(Leadiodide)(Precipitate)+2NaNO3(aq)(Sodiumnitrate)

Few yellow precipitates are:

  1. Lead iodide (PbI2), Silver bromide(AgBr), Cadmium sulphide (CdS).
  2. The chemical reaction in which the mixing of two colorless aqueous solutions produces a yellow precipitate is as follows:

Pb(NO3)2(aq)(Leadnitrate)+2KI(aq)(Potassiumiodide)PbI2(s)(LeadIodide)(YellowPrecipitate)+KNO3(aq)(Potassiumnitrate)

Here (PbI2) is a yellow-colored precipitate.
