Question

Write a balanced equation for Sodium thiosulphate is reacted with dilute Hydrochloric acid.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Reacting to the given molecules:

  • When Hydrochloric acid reacts with Sodium thiosulphate to form Sodium Chloride, Sulphur Dioxide, Sulphur and water.
  • The unbalanced chemical equation can be written as
  1. Na2S2O3(s)+HCl(l)NaCl(s)+SO2(g)+H2O(l)+S(s)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumSulphurThiosulphateAcidChlorideDioxide

Step 2: Balancing the chemical equation

  • The total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side and the product side must be compared.
  • On the reactant side: 2 Sodium atoms from Na2S2O3, 2 Sulphur atoms from Na2S2O3, 3 atoms from Oxygen from Na2S2O3, 1 atom of Hydrogen from HCland 1 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 1 Sodium atom from NaCl, 1 Chlorine atom from NaCl, 2 Sulphur atom from SO2 and S, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2O and 3 Oxygen atoms from H2O and SO2

Step 3: Balancing the reactant molecules by multiplying 2 by HCl and 2 by NaCl

  • The chemical reaction is as follows:
  • Na2S2O3(s)+2HCl(l)2NaCl(s)+SO2(g)+H2O(l)+S(s)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumSulphurThiosulphateAcidChlorideDioxide
  • The total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side and the product side must be compared.
  • On the reactant side: 2 Sodium atoms from Na2S2O3, 2 Sulphur atoms from Na2S2O3, 3 atoms from Oxygen from Na2S2O3, 2 atom of Hydrogen from HCland 2 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 2 Sodium atom from NaCl, 2 Chlorine atom from NaCl, 2 Sulphur atom from SO2 and S, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2O and 3 Oxygen atoms from H2O and SO2.
  • After multiplication, we have an equal number of molecules on both sides of the reaction.

Step 4: Balanced chemical equation is as follows:

  • The chemical reaction is as follows:

Na2S2O3(s)+2HCl(l)2NaCl(s)+SO2(g)+H2O(l)+S(s)SodiumHydrochloricSodiumSulphurSulphurThiosulphateAcidChlorideDioxide

Hence, the equation is balanced.
