Question

Write a balanced equation for the given reaction indicating the conditions of reaction and the physical states of reactants and products: Zinc reacts with dilute hydrochloric giving zinc chloride and hydrogen

Solution

Reactivity Series: The reactivity series is the tabular arrangement of metal in the decreasing order of their reactivity from top to the bottom.

  • According to the reactivity series, the metals placed above the others are more reactive than the ones that are below them.

Reaction of Zinc with Hydrochloric acid:

  • From reactivity series, a metal placed above hydrogen in reactivity series can displace hydrogen from dilute acids.
  • Zinc is placed above hydrogen in the reactivity series.
  • Zinc pieces react with dilute hydrochloric acid to liberate hydrogen gas and zinc chloride.
