  • Write a balanced equation red Lead is warmed with concentrated Hydrochloric acid.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Reacting to the given molecules:

  • The chemical formula of Hydrochloric acid is HCl. It reacts with Red Lead to form Lead Chloride, Chlorine and Water.
  • The unbalanced chemical equation can be written as:
  • Pb3O4(s)+HCl(l)PbCl(s)+H2O(l)+Cl2(g)RedHydrochloricLeadLeadAcidChloride

Step 2: Balancing the chemical equation:

  • The total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side and the product side must be compared.
  • On the reactant side: 3 Lead atoms from Pb3O4, 4 Oxygen atoms from Pb3O4, 1 atom of Hydrogen from HCl and 1 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 1 Lead atom from PbCl, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2O, 3 Chlorine atoms from PbCland Cl2 and 1 Oxygen atom from H2O

Step3: Balancing the reactant molecules by multiplying 2 by Pb3O4, and 6 by PbCl,

The chemical reaction is as follows:

  • 2Pb3O4(s)+HCl(l)6PbCl(s)+H2O(l)+Cl2(g)RedHydrochloricLeadLeadAcidChloride
  • On the reactant side: 6 Lead atoms from Pb3O4, 8 Oxygen atoms from Pb3O4, 1 atom of Hydrogen from HCl and 1 Chlorine atom from HCl.
  • On the product side: 6 Lead atom from PbCl, 2 Hydrogen atoms from H2O, 8 Chlorine atoms from PbCl and Cl2 and 1 Oxygen atom from H2O.

Step 4: Balancing the reactant molecules by multiplying 16 by HCl, 8 by H2O and 2 by Cl2

  • The chemical reaction is as follows:
  • 2Pb3O4(s)+16HCl(l)6PbCl(s)+8H2O(l)+5Cl2(g)RedHydrochloricLeadLeadAcidChloride
  • On the reactant side: 6 Lead atoms from Pb3O4, 8 Oxygen atoms from Pb3O4, 16 an atom of Hydrogen from HCl and 16 Chlorine atom from HCl
  • On the product side: 6 Lead atom from PbCl, 16 Hydrogen atoms from H2O, 16 Chlorine atoms from PbCl and Cl2 and 8 Oxygen atom from H2O.
  • After multiplication, we have an equal number of molecules on both sides of the reaction

Step 5: Balanced chemical equation is as follows:

  1. Therefore, the balanced equation is
  2. 2Pb3O4(s)+16HCl(l)6PbCl(s)+8H2O(l)+5Cl2(g)RedHydrochloricLeadLeadAcidChloride

Hence, the equation is balanced.
