Abscisic acid is a naturally occurring plant growth and metabolism inhibitor found in wide variety of plants. It is synthesised in leaves.
It promotes the senescence of leaf, i.e., fall of leaves happens due to abscisic acid. It inhibits seed germination and development. It plays an important role in seed development, maturation and dormancy. By inducing dormancy, it helps seeds to withstand desiccation and other unfavourable factors. It stimulates the closure of stomata in the epidermis and increases the tolerance of plants to various kinds of stresses.
