1. The breakdown of the ingested food material into chemically simpler forms that can be readily absorbed and assimilated by the body is called as digestion.
2. This process requires the mechanical breakdown followed by action of digestive enzymes to break it down to smaller molecules and may take place extracellularly as is the case in most animals or intracellularly as it occurs in protozoans and cnidarians.
