The gaseous pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide are released into the atmosphere due to various activities.
These pollutants mix with rain water to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid. These acids fall down with the rain drops and this is called acid rain.
This acid rain is very harmful because of it’s corrosive nature. It destroys the structures which are made up of metal and marble.
For example, sulphuric acid, nitric acid react with marble and damage it. The marble of Taj Mahal got affected due to this acid rain and this damage of marble due to acid rain is known as marble cancer.
