Write a brief note on development of Madras

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
Madras was initially a part of the Vijayanagara empire. It was an artificial port city and a trading centre. Later on Madras was inhabited by Dutch and Portuguese traders and colonisers before being taken over by the British during the 17th century. Madras became a full fledged colonial city under the authority of the British. In the later part of the 18th century Madras also became an important naval base and an administrative centre of the British colonisers. As a result, there was a new proliferation of English merchants and Planter families including other wealthy Indians in Madras.
