Solution: Rajendra Chola I (1016 – 1044) was the son of Rajaraja Chola I. He led several military expeditions and the Chola empire remained strong under his rule. He captured several territories in Northern India. He even managed to conquer the Gangai region, thus earning him the name Gangaikondan, which means the conqueror of the Gangai region. The Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple was built to commemorate his victories in North India.
Rajendra Chola had a strong navy which enabled him to conquer the kingdom of Srivijaya (southern Sumatra). Cholas' control over the sea routes led to a great expansion of trade, thus making the empire a prosperous one. Rajendra Chola was a patron of education and he had established the Vedic College.
