Apiculture:

  1. The process of rearing honey bees for the production of honey and beeswax is called apiculture.
  2. The commercial production of honey is done through two methods:

1. Indigenous method:

  1. This is an old traditional method of honey production where naturally prepared honey is obtained by killing the bees or making their escape with the help of smoke.
  2. This method cannot be used for large scale production.

2. Modern methods:

  1. The modern method of apiculture is used for the commercial production of honey on a large scale.
  2. In modern methods, honeybees are reared in movable hives which are made up of a series of square boxes without top or bottoms.
  3. Italian bees are mostly preferred for the production of honey on a commercial basis because they can live long in the hive, are stingless, and give a high yield of honey.
