The given passage is about the severity and frequency of floods in India. Floods are the most common natural calamity in India which brings about heavy destruction of life and property. Heavy rains and flood account for nearly 1,700 lives lost annually and wipes out nearly 96,000 livestock. According to reports, on an average, 7.21 million hectares (roughly 72,000 sq. km.) go under flood water. Floods ravage 3.78 million hectares of agricultural land and damages crops worth Rs. 1, 118 crore annually. However, it is also not possible to protect all flood -prone areas as such an attempt will neither be practical nor economically viable.
