Question

Write a chemical equation to illustrate the acidic nature of nitric acid.

Open in App
Solution

Acid: An acid is a substance that releases hydrogen (H+) ion in its aqueous solution.

  • Nitric acid is reacting with water and produces Hydronium ions and Nitrate ions.

HNO3(aq)H+(aq)+NO3-(aq)

  • The chemical equation to illustrate the acidic nature of nitric acid is :

HNO3(l)(Nitricacid)+NaOH(l)(Sodiumhydroxide)NaNO3(aq)(SodiumNitrate)+H2O(l)(Water)

Nitric acid reacts with the basic hydroxide to give salt and water.

Hence, Nitric acid is acidic in nature.
