The oil of some plants is refined to make a fuel. As this fuel having a biological origin, it is called biofuel and the plant producing this biofuel are called biofuel plants.
The two important varieties of plants are used to produce biofuel:
(1) Ratan Jot
Botanical Name: Jatropha curcas
Family: Euphorbiaceae
The plants of ratan jot are looking like the plants of castor but its seeds are larger than the seeds of castor.
Uses: The cotyledon of seeds of the ratan jot plant are rich in oil contents. The oil extracted from these seeds is refined and used as biodiesel. It is used in place of diesel.
(2) Karanj
Botanical Name: Pongamia pinnata
Family: Papillionaceae
Uses: The seeds of this plant are also oil rich. It is also used to produce biodiesel. This biodiesel is used in automobiles in place of diesel.
