Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  • Define forest.
  • Explain the classification of forest
    • Based on administration
    • Based on ownership and management
Solution:
Forest: It’s an area covered by trees and natural vegetation such as plants, shrubs, and grasses. It is also known as the ‘Lungs of Earth’ because it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releases oxygen for us to inhale.
Forests are classified into two:
  • Based on the administration
  • Based on ownership and management
Based on the administration:
Reserved forests: Reserve forests come under the control of the government. The government authorities imply strict rules to protect the forest and wildlife. There is a restriction on hunting, cutting off trees, and grazing cattle.

Protected forests: They have limited restrictions and are managed by the government. Collection of woods by locals and grazing of cattle are allowed in this area. Whereas harming or cutting trees is not allowed.

Unclassified forests: As the name suggests, these forests are uncategorised. There are no restrictions on tree cutting or grazing.

Based on Ownership:
State forests: State forests are managed and controlled by the state and central government. National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries are some examples of state forests.

Community forest: These forests are governed by local authorities such as the Municipalities, Gram Panchayats, and Van Samrakshan Samitis. The best example is the Community Forest which is managed by one of these bodies.

Private forests: Private forests are owned by individuals and families. The example that you see is SAI Sanctuary which is the only private sanctuary in India. The forestland is owned by two individuals.
