The Bhopal gas tragedy occurred on the night of December 2-3, 1984. The tragedy occurred due to the leakage of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal. Estimates of the death toll vary from 3000 to 8000 people, along with nearly 600,000 injuries. The cause of the disaster was poor maintenance in the plant which caused seepage of water into the MIC tank. It remains the worst industrial disaster.
