Question

Write a linear function that relates y to x.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Find the slope of the line using the points.

From the above graph Ordered pairs are (0,5)(1.5,4)(3,3)(4.5,2)

We know, slope of the line, m=changeinychangeinx=y2-y1x2-x1

Now using two points (0,5)(1.5,4) Here x1=0,x2=1.5 and y1=5,y2=4

m=4-51.5-0=-11.5=-0.67

Step 2: Finding the linear function that relates y to x.

We know, Linear function: y=mx+c

y=-0.67x+c m=1

5=-0.67×0+c (Putting y=5 and x=0 i.e., (0,5))

5=0+c5=cc=5

Now again put c=5 in linear function,

y=-0.67x+5

Hence, Linear function would be y=-0.67x+5.
