  • Botanical gardens are large area or garden dedicated for the collection, cultivation, and display of a wide range of plants which are labeled with their botanical names.
  • They are often run by scientific research organizations and often have associated herbaria and research programmes in plant taxonomy.
  • Their significant role is to maintain documented collections of living plants for scientific research, conservation, display, and education.
  • It may consist of plant collections such as cacti and other succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world.
  • Therefore they may have greenhouses, shadehouses with special collections of tropical plants, alpine plants, and exotic plants.
  • It allows us to grow plants which may become extinct i.e it helps to conserve species diversity and also allows restoration and rehabilitation of degraded habitats.
  • The most famous botanical garden in India is Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, Kolkata.
  • It is known for the Great Banyan Tree.
