Write a note on Single Cell Protein (SCP).

Open in App
Solution

Single Cell Protein (SCP) is referred to the protein derived from the dried cells of micro-organisms like yeast, fungi, bacteria, and algae. These are often used as protein supplements in human foods or animal feeds. These micro-organisms utilize the various organic wastes or feedstocks as their main carbon source for their growth and synthesis of protein concentrate and amino acids. Increase in the population and shortage of protein supply can be overcome by the massive production of SCP.
Other than the advantages, it can't simply replace the natural protein sources as SCP contains a higher nucleic acid content and also its digestibility is very slow.
