Write a note on the inland waterways of Europe.

Inland waterways means any body of water that is not connected to oceans directly. Inland waterways play an important role in transportation system in Europe, more then 37,000 km of waterways connect thousands of cities and industrial regions. Some 21 out of 28 member states have inland waterway, out of which 13 has interconnected networks. Compare to other mode of transport which are confronted with congestion and capacity problem, inland waterways are reliable, energy efficient and have more capacity for increased exploitation.
