  1. Cell is the tiny compartments and structural and functional units of life.
  2. Each cell differs in its shape and size.

Cell size :

  1. There are different sizes of cells.
  2. The cell size ranges from 10 micrometers to 18cm.
  3. Its size ranges from small bacteria (microscopic) to large eggs of birds (macroscopic).
  4. The smallest cell is the bacteria Mycoplasma gallicepticum.
  5. This cell measures about 10 micrometers.
  6. The largest cell is the egg of an ostrich and it ranges from 15 to 18 cm.
  7. The human nerve cell is the longest cell in the human body and is about 90 cm long.

Cell shape :

  1. The shape of each cell varies depending upon the function they perform.
  2. The shape of the cell is depending upon the following factors: surface tension, the viscosity of protoplasm, rigidity of the cell membrane, internal environment, and function.
  3. The shapes of the cell may be oval, round, polygonal, spherical, elongated, cuboidal, cylindrical, tubular, disk-like, and irregular.
  4. Some type of cells can change their shape according to their activities.
  5. Such as leukocytes of the blood and amoeba can change their shape.
