The towns excavated at the sites of the Indus Valley civilization are well planned and are like modern cities.
The city was divided into two parts. The upper part which was fortified had public buildings and houses of the ruling class. The lower part of the city was home to the common people.
The roads were wide and straight, with streets intersecting at right angles.
Evidence from excavations suggests that the cities had an advanced drainage system. Both sides of the street had covered drains, which carried dirty water to an underground main drain outside the city.
