India contributes to 4% of the world's water resources.
India recieves water from annual rainfall and surface and groundwater sources but only 60% of the water from these sources is usable.
Main surface sources are rivers, lakes, ponds and tanks in India. Peninsular rivers like Kaveri,Godavari, etc. have less annual water flow but their water is utilised.
Ganga and Brahmaputra basins have 46% of the total renewable groundwater resources.
Wells are mainly used to draw the groundwater and the groundwater utilisation is relatively higher in North Western and Southern parts of India.
There are lagoons and backwaters due to the indented coastlines are of some states like Kerala, Odisha and West Bengal.
Water is highly demanded for domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes in India. Thus, multipurpose dams and river valley projects like Sardar Sarovar, Bhakra Nangal, etc. are undertaken by the government.
