Peninsular Rivers are broad ,stable and flow through shallow valleys .These are most ancient than Himalayan rivers and have almost attained the old age.Most of the peninsular rivers flow eastwards because their main water divide is the western Ghats.Only Narmada and Tapi are exceptions,which flow from east to west in the rift valleys .Pensinsular rivers depend on the rain water ,therefore they are seasonal Mahanadi,Godavari,Krishna and Kaveri are east flowing rivers whereas Narmada and Tapi are west flowing peninsular rivers.The Kaveri originates from the BRahmagiri hills and drains into Bay of Bengal near Kaveripatanam Its left bank tributaries are Herangi,Hemvati,Shimsa and right bank tributaries are Lakshman Teerth,Kabini,Bhawani etc.Krishna originates near Mahabaleshwar .Its important tributaries are Koyna, Ghatprabha, Malprabha,Bitmap etc.
