Solution

Dear Student,
  • The Bhopal gas tragedy was a gas leak incident at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. It happened on the night of 2nd-3rd December 1984.
  • A dangerous chemical reaction occurred in the UCIL pesticide plant. Water entered into the tank containing methyl isocyanate gas.
  • This led to the rise in temperature and pressure inside the tank, which caused the release of methyl isocyanate gas from the tank.
  • The gas spread within the radius of eight kilometers, causing coughing, breathlessness, stomach pain, burning in the respiratory tract among other symptoms.Over 500,000 people were exposed to methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas.
  • Many people who survived this disaster, suffered from various diseases for the remainder of their lives. People still suffer from gynecological disorders, cancer and tuberculosis, etc. as the result of the inhalation of the gas.
