The tendency of an element to form chains of identical atoms is called catenation. Thus it is the property by the virtue of which atoms of the element can link to each other to form long chains. It is seen maximum in carbon since the $C-C$ bond energy is maximum. Carbon undergoes self linking forming straight, branched and closed chains.
