  1. A process in which some wavelengths of an illuminating light source are absorbed by pigments in an object, while the remaining wavelengths are reflected.
  2. The ultimate colour of an object is determined by beginning with a single colour or mixture of colours and some colours of light are subtracted from the original set.
  3. For example, yellow looks like yellow because it reflects red and green light but absorbs blue light.
