The cotton textile industry developed in India in the later part of the 19th century. Initiallly, it was concentrated in the cotton growing states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Bombay and Ahmedabad were important centres of cotton textile industry before independence. Currently, in India, there are about 2000 cotton textile mills in India. Apart from this, there are also several thousand small cotton textile units having up to ten looms. India has a large share of the world production and trade of cotton yarn. It exports cotton yarn to Japan, United States, United Kingdom, Russia, France, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and other countries.
