Election commission :
(i) Election Commission is a constitutional body of the government of India.
(ii) The Election Commission of India consists of a Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners. They are appointed by the President of India.
(iii) The functions of Election Commission of India are as follows:
1. Demarcation of Constituencies.
2. Preparation of Electoral Rolls.
3. Recognition of Political parties and allotment of symbols.
4. Scrutiny of nomination papers.
5. Conduct of polls.
6. Scrutiny of election expense of candidates
Political parties:
(i) A political party is constituted by a group of people who come together to contest elections with the aim of holding power and running the government.
(ii) Political parties are formed by people on the basis of shared political, social and economic ideologies and principles. These are given shape in the form of electoral promises made to voters which are known as manifesto.
(iii) Political parties work to raise awareness among people about political and social issues and promise to provide solutions to them through their programmes which are to be implemented if they come to power.
(iv) Political parties are the representatives of the people in a democratic election.They form the government on behalf of the people.
(v) Parliamentary democracy cannot function without political parties.The party which gets the majority vote forms the govt and the minority party forms the opposition.The opposition exposes the drawbacks and inefficiency of the running govt. and makes public concious.
