Kalbeliyas are a community whose livelihood depended on snakes. They were snake charmers. Snakes were an important part of their culture as even their dance form, the Kalbeliya dance, resembles the movement of a snake.
Kalbeliya tradition included gifting snakes to daughters that were passed from one generation to another.
Nowadays, Kalbeliyas have shifted to dairy and poultry farming as snake charming is illegal.
