Solution

Answer:

Discrimination based on the colour of skin and race is known as apartheid. It was practised in South Africa between 1948-1994 by the white minority government over the native population.

  • Developed under the racialist National Party in 1948, apartheid not just to include different and inferior non-white government services, seats, and building entrances. It also deprived South African blacks of their citizenship and removed any non-white political representation.
  • Nelson Mandela was a prominent anti-apartheid protester who led movements for defiance and who served as a lawyer.
  • He was arrested in 1962, and sentenced to life for treason to overthrow the government. His incarceration has done nothing to quench his resistance.
  • The National Party started the apartheid reform in the 1980s following decades of violent protests at home and sanctions abroad.
  • The scheme was dismantled in 1990, and Nelson Mandela freed from the prison.
  • Mandela agreed to serve for one term as President in 1994.
