Mega means large and lithos means rocks. Megaliths were large stones or rocks used to mark burial sites. Megaliths were very big in size which helped people identify the place of burial from a distance. The practice of erecting them started about 3000 years ago.
Such stone monuments are prevalent throughout the Deccan, south India, in the north-east and Kashmir.
Black and Red Ware was sometimes buried with the dead. Sometimes there was just a pit with an opening that was covered with a huge boulder. The dead people were placed inside the pit through the porthole. Since people believed in the afterlife, they were buried with weapons of iron, horses and horse equipment and ornaments of stone and gold. The burials and the customs around it give us a lot of insight about the lives of the people who erected them.
