Metabolism is a series of enzyme-catalysed biochemical reactions taking place in living cells.
It is of following types:
1) Anabolism- is the metabolic pathway in which compound nutrient molecules are synthesized from simpler forms. For example, the production of glucose from carbon dioxide and water (photosynthesis).
2) Catabolism- is a metabolism pathway in which larger nutrient molecules are broken down into simpler forms. For example, glycolysis i.e the breakdown of glucose to produce energy.
When anabolism and catabolism operate together the process is called amphibolism. For example, the Krebs cycle.
