The revolt of 1857 started as a mutiny in the army of the East India Company. The revolt started in Meerut on May 10, 1857. Soon, however, the revolt spread to other parts of Northern India. from Delhi to Bihar. Within this area, which was mostly the present day Uttar Pradesh, the revolt became a mass movement. Apart from soldiers, the revolt included various feudal aristocrats who had lost power to the British, the rural landlords and also peasants who had to face British oppression. However, the revolt remained confined to just Northern India. It did not spread to other parts of India like Punjab, Western or Southern India.
