  • A chemical substance that lacks carbon-hydrogen bonds is known as an Inorganic compound.
  • Calcium Cyanamide's other name is Nitrolium.
  • It is the calcium salt of the anion cyanamide CN22-.

Nitrolium Preparation:

  • Calcium carbide is used to make calcium cyanamide.
  • The carbide powder is heated to around 1000oC in an electric furnace that is fed with nitrogen for several hours.
  • The product is cooled to room temperature, and any unreacted carbide is carefully leached out with water.
  • The reaction for the preparation of Nitrolium is depicted below:

Nitrolium Applications:

  • It is used for agriculture purposes as a fertilizer.
  • It is fused with sodium carbonate to produce sodium cyanide. In gold mining, in the cyanide process, sodium cyanide is used widely.
