Solution

Hydrogen:

  • Hydrogen is a chemical element having an atomic number equal to one.
  • It was discovered by Henry Cavendish.
  • It is a gas with no color and odor and has the lowest density of all gases.
  • It is a highly inflammable gas.

Occurrence of hydrogen:

  • Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe.
  • It is the third most abundant element after oxygen and silicon on the earth.
  • It is found in gaseous form and being lighter it is found in very less quantities in the atmosphere.

Isotopes of Hydrogen:

  • Isotopes of atoms have the same atomic number and different mass numbers due to different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus of the atom.
  • Hydrogen occurs in three isotopes that are tritium, deuterium, and protium.
  • The most abundant isotope is protium, It constitutes 99.98 % of total hydrogen.
  • Deuterium is found as 0.0156% of total hydrogen on the earth.
  • The Tritium is radioactive and only found in trace quantities.
