Dear Student,
Democracy has its origins in ancient Greek political and philosophical thought. The word 'democracy' comes from two words, demos which means common people and kratos which means strength. The first democracy was established in the city of Athens in 508-507 BC by Cleisthenes who is also known as the father of Athenian democracy. Later on the system of democracy spread from Greece to other parts of the world and many countries started to adopt it as their form of governance. Now, in today's world, democracy is considered to be the most just and efficient form of government. That is why it is also defined as a form of government of the people, by the people and for the people.
