Dear Student
The pipeline is a new transportation network. Earlier, pipelines were used to transport water in and out of cities and industries. Now pipelines are also used to transport natural gas, crude oil, petro products from big plants and gas fields to fertilization plants, thermal power plants, refineries and factories. If a solid can be converted into a slurry, that can also be transported via a pipeline. Though laying pipelines is expensive, once set up they highly reduce the cost of transportation as the products simply need to be put through one end and retrieved from another and the shipment cost is zeroed down.
In India, oil is transported from Assam to Kanpur via pipeline, from Salaya (Gujarat) to Jalandhar via pipeline and gas is transported from Hazira (Gujarat) to Jagdishpur (UP) via pipeline. They have various branches in between.
