The speaker is the most important member of the Lok Sabha.

• The speaker is elected soon after the general elections for a term of 5 years (in the very first meeting of the Lok Sabha) from amongst the members of the lok sabha.
• He presides over the meetings of the Lok Sabha and conducts its business.
• Resolutions or Bills can be moved only with his permission.
• He decides whether a bill is a money bill or not.
• He has the power to adjourn the meetings of the Lok Sabha.

Om Birla is the current speaker of Lok Sabha.
