The Government of India launched the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) in December, 2000, under which, one crore of the poorest among the below poverty line (BPL) families were identified under the targeted public distribution system (TPDS).
Features of Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY):
Poor families were identified by the respective state governments.
Initially, 25 kg of food grains were made available to each eligible family at a highly subsidised rate of ₹2 per kg for wheat and ₹3 per kg for rice.
It was increased to 35 kg per family per month with effect from 1 April 2002.
