The Cripps mission headed by Sir Stafford Cripps came to India in 1942 to break the political deadlock. The following proposals were made under the Cripps Mission:

• Provision for the protection of religious and racial minorities to be made.
• Princely states could either join the Indian Union or remain free.
• During WWII, the Viceroy and his Executive Council would oversee the defence of the country.
• The government wanted the Indian leaders to cooperate till the new constitution was prepared.
• Dominion Status to be granted to India after WWII.
• Constituent Assembly to be set up to draft the Constitution of India.
• The Constitution would be accepted by the British government.
• The Province could draft their own constitution if it disagreed with the constitution drafted by the Constituent Assembly.
