The Election Commission is a constitutional institution established to conduct free and fair elections in India. The Election Commission consists of one Chief Election Commissioner and two other election commissioners.

The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are appointed by the President.
The tenure of the member of the election commission is of 6 years or up to the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

The Election Commission of India is independent of the other institutions in India and works without any internal or external influence. Not even the President and the Prime Minister of the country can influence the Election Commission to change its decision.
