Emergent layer
This is the tallest layer in the rainforest. It is made up of a few wide, tall trees that grow taller than the canopy layer. These trees have small waxy leaves in order to survive in the very hot weather.
In this layer the trees experience different weather conditions including Very hot weather, strong winds, and bad rain storms.
In this layer eagles, gliders, bats, and butterflies live.
This layer gets more sun than any of the other layers in the rainforest.
This layer is the brightest layer because it gets the most sunlight.
At this layer you can see forming into the clouds condensation.
When there are strong winds the seeds from the trees are spread throughout the rainforest.
Many of the trees leaves are blown off by the strong winds. The trees are never totally bare.
There are always some leaves still on the tree tops.

Animals of the Emergent Layer
In this layer, there are Toucans, Sparrowhawks, Butterflies, and Moths, and Monkeys.
The animals find shelter high in this layer to stay away from their enemies.
Toucans- Toucans have a yellow, blue, black, red and orange beak. This bird is a very active bird. Toucans are found as far as Mexico but are mostly found in South America. Toucans live in small communities and are very loud. The loud noises sound like a croaking frog. Toucans are related to the woodpeckers and nest in tree holes. Toucans eat fruit bird eggs, rodents, insects, reptiles, and other weaker birds. The toucan's predators are humans, cats, and its worst enemy is the jaguar.
Sparrow Hawk- Sparrowhawks are small birds that are between 30 and 40 cm tall with a wingspan of 60-80 cm wide. In this species, the male is smaller than the female. The male has a grey back and the female has a brown back. Sparrowhawks prey on other small birds. This is the only thing that they eat. These birds are very good fliers. They can fly at a fast speed and swoop down as low as bushes. Sparrowhawks nest in May and usually lay about four to five eggs.
Monkeys- Howler monkeys live in Central and South American Rainforests. These monkeys eat fruit and howl very loud. When these monkeys howl they can be heard from up to three miles away. They can live up to 15-20 years. These monkeys around 20 pounds. Howler monkeys use their tail like another arm. They can swing from branches by their tail.
