With its long history of 3000 years, Delhi has undertaken the rise and fall through various chequered events.
i.Delhi first became the capital of a kingdom under the Tomara Rajputs, who were defeated in the middle of 12th century by the
Chauhans of Ajmer. Under the Tomaras and Chauhans that Delhi became an important commercial centre.
ii. It became a hub for merchants, coins were also minted here and were circulated.
iii. Several temples were also built in here.
iv. Right from the days of the Rajput rulers; Delhi gradually grew in political importance in India. During the Mughal rule, it reached its pinnacle of political importance.
v. Delhi became an important city and later capital with the establishment of Delhi Sultanate in the 12th century.
vi. The Delhi Sultanate began in the early 13th century. This marked the transformation of Delhi into a capital that controlled many areas of the subcontinent.
2) Authors of tawarikh were learned men: secretaries, administrators, poets and courtiers, who both recounted events and advised rulers on governance, emphasising the importance of just rule.
They often wrote their histories for Sultans in the hope of getting rich rewards.These authors advised rulers on need to preserve an “ideal” social order based on birthright and gender distinctions.
